| Foreword |
The European directive 94/27/CEE (which is the 12th
revision of the directive 76/769/CEE relating to restrictions on the release onto
the market and use of certain hazardous substances and preparations) poses a limit
on the quantity of nickel that can be released by products destined to come into
direct and prolonged contact with the user's skin. Said limit, which is set at
0.5 g/cm²/ week, is mentioned in all the standards specifically relating to such
products.
Since the harmonized standards were published in the Official Journal of the European
Community on July 20th 1999, the deadlines are: |
- 20 January 2000: since this date, member states have been obliged to transpose
the content of the harmonized standard into their respective national legislation,
since 6 months had passed since the date of the standard's publication;
- 20 July 2000 : since this time, no manufacturer or importer has been allowed
to release products that do not comply with the directive onto the market;
- 20 July 2001: since this date, the sale or transfer to the end user of products
that do not comply with the directive has been forbidden.
|
| The sequence of tests that the products must undergo to verify
how much nickel they release in compliance with the harmonized standards EN 1810:1998,
EN 1811:1998, EN 12472:1998, can be divided into three stages: |
- a treatment that simulates wear and tear in normal usage;
- a chemical conditioning that simulates the release of nickel ions to the user's
skin due to perspiration
- quantitative analysis of the concentration of nickel in the extractor solution
(synthetic perspiration) by atomic absorption spectrometry (or a similar technique).
|
In order to recreate a totally nickel-free electrochemical
coating of at least 10, which is needed to ensure an effective barrier against
the nickel contained in the substrate, copper is the most plausible solution because
it also has a cost similar to that of nickel but, unfortunately, it also poses
certain other problems by comparison with nickel:
- it is an excellent leveler, but not a very good lustering agent;
- s- if it is not adequately fixed, it tends to migrate towards the surface and
cause oxidation. That is why the copper has to be covered with a coating that
lends the object luster and forms an effective barrier layer.
The most suitable coatings are Palladium and Bronze. Palladium has been the most
often used coating for nickel-free applications in the past, but it tends to become
contaminated easily and today it is no longer a feasible option because of the
high cost of the metal. It could consequently be said that the ideal protective
layer for copper today is a deposit of "white bronze", which presents the following
advantages in particular: |
- an appearance identical to a deposit of palladium
- copper migration is totally prevented
- good corrosion resistance
- it gives the substrate the luster typical of nickel
- it is easy to "strip" in the event of error (unlike palladium)
- it is inexpensive

| : BRONZE-PLATING E/R |
Electrolytic procedure for depositing a very bright
and very leveling alloy of copper-tin-zinc, in yellow (even up to considerable
thicknesses) or white (for medium-to-low densities); the bronze-plating bath has
found an important application in the decorative sector (costume jewelry, spectacle
frames). The bronze deposit guarantees the most valid alternative to nickel deposition;
it has its own luster and a corrosion resistance comparable with that of nickel.
The white bronze deposit can be left as a finishing layer without posing any corrosion
problems, or it can be coated, depending on your needs and requirements, with
an adequate thickness of a precious metal. |
